Description

The Sperrgebiet is a large stretch of desert in the South West of Namibia and is one of the richest regions for diamond mining in the world. When Namibia was colonized by Germany in the early 1900s, many mining towns sprouted in the desert and Elizabeth Bay, just south of Luderitz was one of them. Though often forgotten in the shadow of its ghost town counterpart, Kolmanskop, Elizabeth Bay was once a lucrative diamond mining town which housed monstrous machinery for desalinating ocean water and extracting diamonds from the spoils of the desert. But today these decrepit buildings and machinery stand silent and only speak to tell of a dark history of human greed and exploitation….

The skies in Namibia are pristine and imaging of the night skies always results in excellent detail. An astro modded camera brings out nebulous details in the milky way band and the tracking and stacking of sub frames brings out clarity in the dust lanes. A new modern mine has come up, just a short distance from this abandoned mine and casts a warm glow over the ghosts of times past….
